Are you preparing for Christmas yet?

by shirleyhassall 11/12/2009 12:24:00 PM
Is it just me or does Christmas start earlier and earlier each year? In the middle of October and most definitely at the end of October, there were already Christmas styled T.V. commercials and a small Christmas section in the stores. You would think that the recession would hold all this back a bit. But I think the stores have it in mind to make the public panic buy. Better get this now before I run out of money, my job goes or before VAT goes up! Then there is all the panic of what present to get whom, can I afford it and Aunt Bessie is coming over this year! She's so hard to please always nagging at everything!

What gets me is not only has Christmas become more and more commercial; everybody and anybody celebrates. Peoples from other religions or no religion celebrate Christmas without knowing or understanding the true meaning of why it is celebrated. Some people see this as a day to be with family, friends, stay home from work, be with the children, watch T.V., eat as much turkey as they can or have lots of new gadgets they really can do without.

The wonder and mystery of the Virgin birth somehow gets lost in the victorian figure of Father Christmas or in the US Santa Claus. All the tinsel and glitter, present opening and surprise visits from the strange bearded man in a red suit who comes down the chimney seems to create wonder and mystery instead. Hope and a loving Saviour gets sidelined by who has the most lights on their house, who has the best looking tree or spent the most during the Christmas season.

As the Advent season starts to approach, let's consider and prepare for Christmas this year by really engaging in the story of Christ's birth. Set on the journey with Mary and Joseph and see the true miracles, mystery and wonder. Once we have grasped this may our faith grow, our heart soften and our tongue confess what a wondrous time Christmas really is and give praise, adoration and thanksgiving to the One and True God who gave us such a precious gift; his Son Jesus Christ.

Have a wonderous and safe Advent and Christmas season.

God bless,

Shirley

Exploring World Issues

by shirleyhassall 5/18/2009 4:29:00 AM

Just a few questions to get started with-

What world issues affect you and how can you as a Christian understand Gods place within them?

What ways can Christians help those of other faith's or no faith see the world through God's eyes?

Jesus says, 'Love your enemy'. How can we do this when we see such pain and devistation cause by corrupt people?

Fun Day

by shirleyhassall 5/18/2009 3:31:00 AM

I would just like to thank everyone who came to the Fun Day and to those who helped make it possiable.

In the Community Centre we had the stalls for the ploughman's lunch tickets (which went fast!), raffle, name a bunny, brick-a-brack, cakes, Mabels cards, plants, books videos and children's toys. In the church we had the children's games run by Jr. Church and friends of the church and crafts run by Letchworth Third Rainbows Girl Guides. Children and young people could decorate a picture frame or a pin wheel, or play one of many games and win a prize such as; pick a lolly, roll a six, frog golf, don't buzz the wire. We also had PS2 games which changed every hour from Rocky (boxing), Need for Speed and Pro Evolution Soccer and was run by our Youth Group Engage. We also had face painting which saw the little ones change into a cats, butterflies, a dolphin (which was a challange!) and a garden!

It was great day and everyone had a wonderful time and the charities that will benifit from the £440.00 raised are the Keech Cottage Children's Hospice and the North Herts Branch of the MS Society.

It is wonderful when people can come together not only to have fun, but to help others in the process. This is what I belive Jesus meant by loving one another and look after my sheep. I belive that this is what was experianced on this day. God's love.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

God, Jesus Christ and The Holy Spirit | Fun Day

Seems like summer 2day..

by shirleyhassall 5/10/2009 11:12:00 AM

What a wonderful day today is!  Sunny, warm and the birds are singing. Days like today drive home the wonders God has created. There has been so much contoversy in regards to a master designer and creator. Science does not disprove that God exists, it only confirms it. Today is one of those days that does just that -confirms God is Powerful, Creative,  designer extraordinaire and Almighty  No matter how you are feeling at the moment and what is going on in your life, all you have to do is stop. Stop and listen to the birds, the breeze through the tree's stirring the leaves, stop and hear the sounds of laughter and joy. Listen, you just might hear God calling you and saying to you that everything is ok. Things will get better. Trust in God, listen.. he is talking to you.

Have a wonderful day!

Take care,

Shirley

Happy Easter!

by shirleyhassall 4/11/2009 6:04:00 AM

As a child I always loved Easter! Since I was brought up in the USA I did not have the same chocolate Easter eggs as in the UK. Mostly they were marshmellow filled and cream filled eggs, jelly bird eggs and a large chocolate or white chocolate Easter bunny all in a large basket with a big bow. I also loved colouring eggs with food dye, little bit hard to do here with brown eggs but crayons still work!

It was not until I became a Christian that I knew what Easter was about. Now, I  love Easter even more! Christ went through a horrific time, but he did it out of love for you and me. I feel that is what is so moving about his suffering on the cross. Love, Forgiveness and New Life. He forgave those who placed him on the cross. He took punishment for all sins. He wiped the slate clean and rose to life. He defeated death.

We too can rise to new life everyday! Christ is waiting to hear from you. Talk to him, ask for forgiveness for the things that you have done that drag you down like a millstone. When we ask for forgiveness we are forgiven. That is God's promise and he never breaks a promise! Then you are able to start again - a new life! A new start! Wonderous!

Have a wonderous experiance of Jesus this Easter.

Take care,

Shirley

Comments of comments found on the web

by shirleyhassall 12/24/2008 3:10:00 AM

I realise that this is a odd entry, but hear me out. I was looking a home page of my internet provider and I saw this question:

Have your say: " What does Christmas mean to you?"

The purpose of this question was explained once you get to the comments was if you were to write the Queens speach to the nation, what would you say? Many comments were frankly, shocking and very few did not mention our Lord Jesus Christ. So, I stuck up for our Lord and posted the following comment:

Christmas for many is a hardship, full of stress and worry. Families rally together who really do not like each other, but try their best to get along. Parents spend far too much money on their children and on their partners only too complain the rest of the New Year about their debts. Over eating and over drinking are causes for concern as many know they shouldn’t but do it anyway and complain later about the damage caused either to their waistline or the hurtful words they said after a merry drink.

This Christmas let us look at the world through God's eyes. The wonder, the mystery and joy that Christmas should be and extend that love, peace and caring compassion that encompasses what the season is about and let it flow into our lives the rest of the New Year. This is supposed to be a time of looking toward God's Son Jesus, and not Santa Claus, tinsel and burnt turkey dinners.

I wonder how much better the world would really be if all human kind just stopped being devoted to self and started being devoted to others with the same passion as they do for themselves. We might just see the light of life, stay away from the darkness of destruction and death. We might just find true enjoyment of the world we have been given and see our neighbours and family as precious gifts from God.

I know that the world would be a better place, I put 'I wonder', just to get people thinking who are not Christian or of any faith.

I do believe that although we are Christians we still tend to get all caught up in the tinsel and burnt turkey syndrome that encompasses the Christmas season. However, I thank God that His Son Jesus Christ’s teaching of compassion for others grounds us. We just need to spread it farther a field into our communities, towns, cities and villages, so that when people come to the Christmas season they come to it with hope, joy and peace that they have been shown throughout the entire year.

I hope your Christmas has been a good one and if for any reason it has not, remember, God is there is listen to you when ever you need him, he is waiting to hear from you.

God bless,

shirley
